Girls Rock MKE: Why We Love This Organization
A Brief History of Girls Rock MKE
Girls Rock MKE is a local organization that holds a special place in our hearts here at Pie Inc. Pie Inc. Founder Valeri Lucks collaborated with Ashley Smith, owner of Alive and Fine in Bay View, to bring Girls Rock to Milwaukee in 2013. Since then, the organization has blossomed and is now run by a team of many dedicated volunteers.
The mission at Girls Rock MKE is simple: “to empower individuals of marginalized identities and diverse experiences through music education and performance.” This mission statement has even led the organization to the decision to change its name to Let’s Get Loud MKE in January 2027.
The organization will stay grounded in its mission, which is directly reflected by this name change. Let’s Get Loud MKE is a more inclusive name for the organization that directly reflects the wants of the campers, volunteers, and parents alike. Essentially, this name change is rooted in the desire to be more representative of all those involved in the organization.
Girls Rock MKE holds a one-week summer day camp for girls and gender-expansive youth between 3rd and 12th grade. Throughout the week, campers of all skill levels learn an instrument (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, or vocals), form a band, and write an original song. At the end of the week, the bands perform their songs on stage in a showcase for friends, family, and of course, their fans.
This camp not only serves as an opportunity for young individuals to express themselves musically but also allows them to be fully immersed in a safe and supportive community that allows for collaboration and growth among individuals. This environment fosters independent thinking and builds positive self-esteem within campers.
In addition to Girls Rock MKE, there is also a camp session known as Ladies Rock MKE, which runs Friday to Sunday and is open to women and gender-expansive adults ages 18 and older. Same concept as Girls Rock MKE, but for musically curious adults!
