A Slice of History: How Pi Day Began
The History of Pi Day
Pi Day, in honor of the mathematical constant, is celebrated on March 14. But have you ever wondered where that tradition originated?
In 1988, Pi Day was founded by physicist Larry Shaw. The date was deemed appropriate for two reasons: it represents the first three digits of pi (3.14), and it also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday.
The first Pi Day celebration took place at the Exploratorium (Shaw’s place of work), a San Francisco-based interactive science museum. The celebration featured a parade in a circular shape, along with fruit pies.
In 2009, Pi Day became a formal holiday when the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation officially recognizing it.
